Human-centered design for improving financial inclusion and health in East Africa
In the last decade, East Africa has greatly improved access to financial and healthcare services in urban and rural areas through SMS-based mobile applications. With more than a quarter of the population now using mobile internet, there is a potential to further increase the impact of mobile interventions by integrating technologies like artificial intelligence (AI). In this talk, Edith Luhanga, an assistant research professor at CMU-Africa, will discuss projects that use human-centered design to develop AI-based applications for uniquely identifying livestock through biometrics and for early warning of pregnancy complications. The first aims to improve access to loans and international trade opportunities, and the second to reduce maternal deaths.
